Dishwasher

A dishwasher performs four basic fills with water, washes, let’s water drain off, and dries dishes. Replacement of front panels enables some dishwashers to be fitted into various kitchen decorative schemes. Not every dishwasher engages in every one of these functions, but they all engage in some, so let's discuss each one so you will understand whatever happens. Throughout the discussion, keep in mind that the timer controls the on-off phase of each function. The timer is the device that controls functions. This drawing will give you an idea of how the timer is connected to the various components.
1. Initial draining. When you turn on a unit, there is a brief period (of- less than one minute) when the drain valve opens and the pump operates to drain whatever water may be left the machine from the last washing.
2. Filling. The drain valve closes the pump shuts the water- inlet valve in the hot-water line opens. Water enters the tub. The amount of water that eventually enters the ill-depends not only on the amount of time that the valve remains open, which is constant, but on the water pressure in your home
If the water pressure is too great, there is a possibility that too much water can enter the tub and leak from around the door. Most manufacturers install a float valve in series water-inlet valve to keep it from happening. When water reaches the high mark, the water valve closes and is strong enough to prevent water from entering the tub although the water-inlet valve may still be open. But what if the float valve fails, which may happen? This is an important point to consider if you should find water on the floor.
3. First washing water-inlet valve closes. The way in which takes place depends on whether the dishwasher is equipped with an impeller or spray arm(s). An impeller resembles an agitator in a clothes washer, but it is driven with much greater force, and it revolves rather than oscillates. In a dishwasher that uses an impeller, usually there is only one motor. It is a "common" unit in that it drives not only the impeller, but also the drain pump. The impellers in dishwashers in most cases are split-phase units although some use shaded-pole motors. In an impeller-equipped dishwasher, the amount of hot water permitted to enter the tub is sufficient to rise above the top of the impeller. The impeller is driven with great force to throw water up onto the dishes and clean food particles from them. As the water is circulated, it mixes with detergent. The detergent function of a typical dishwasher is interesting to note. In most models, there are actually two phases. Detergent used during the first washing is the detergent not normally placed in the detergent cup that has the spring-loaded cover. It is the detergent put into the open cup (or similar device). The second phase of detergent action, as you will see soon, takes place during the second washing. This phase uses the detergent that is placed in the cup. As the" spring opens the cover dishwasher that has a spray arm (or spray arms), the amount of hot water permitted to enter the tub usually is kept below the top of the spray arm in the base of the tub. Some dishwashers also have a spray arm in the top of the tub. In these, sufficient hot water enters the tub to permit both arms to do an adequate job.
A dishwasher equipped with a spray arm(s) usually has two motors. One motor drives the spray arm and the pump which permits wash water to recalculate. The other motor, which drives the drain pump, is at rest during the washing phase. The recirculation pump drives water up the spray arm and out the holes in the arm. These holes are offset to each other so that the force of the water being ejected from them causes the spray arm to revolve, spraying water with great force over the entire interior of the tub. In both impeller and spray-arm equipped dishwashers, the washing phase takes five or six minutes.
