Clothes dryers

They are big and heavy to maneuver, but once you have opened them up,
you will find that clothes dryers are rather simple machines. There are two kinds: those that heat with gas, and those that heat with electricity. ALTHOUGH ALL GAS-HEATED CLOTHES DRYERS work in generally the same way, manufacturers have incorporated various technical differences. The same is true of all clothes dryers that generate heat with electricity. This means that you may not be able to find the cause of a problem and fix it without the wiring diagram that is glued to the rear panel or somewhere on the inside of the chassis. But since all gas clothes dryers work basically the same way, and all electric dryers work generally the same, knowing how they function is important to an understanding of what can go wrong with them. This knowledge leads to an idea of what faulty components to look for when a failure occurs. First is a discussion of operational functions that are common to both gas and electric units. We then explain functions relative to gas dryers, which is followed by a discussion of functions relative to electric dryers. The final sections of the chapter discuss problems and their solutions. One section concerns problems relative to all clothes dryers, whether gas or electric. Another section is devoted to problems common only to gas dryers, and the final section deals with electric clothes-dryer problems. What all dryers have in common WHETHER GAS OR ELECTRIC, every clothes dryer has the same major components. These are: an electric motor, a large drum, a blower unit, and a couple of belts. Every dryer, of course, also has a heat source, but this differs depending on whether the heat source is operated by gas or by electricity. Heat sources are discussed later in this chapter, but every dryer has a centrifugal switch that controls the heat source. The job of the centrifugal switch is to keep the heat turned off until the drum has revolved for several seconds and is turning at full speed. This feature is incorporated to assure that failure of the drum to revolve won't result in heat being applied to one portion of damp clothes, damaging them. Concerning motors, most are split-phase types that are rated at 1/3 horsepower. They operate on 115 volts AC.
